Care-A-Van

The Care-A-Van is a service provided to Seniors and Residents with restricted mobility.

Who Can Use It?

The Care-A-Van can be used by anyone over the age of 55, residents with use of aids such as a wheelchair, a walker or a cane, or residents who have a demonstrated inability to walk 175 yards / 158 meters without assistance.

The Care-A-Van is specially equipped for two (2) passengers in wheelchairs and twelve (12) seated passengers. It features low steps and handrails to provide easy access.

How Do You Qualify To Use The Care-A-Van?

You must be a registered user to qualify for Care-A-Van service. How you register is simple -- either on your first trip or at the ACS.

Scheduling Care-A-Van Service

Once you're registered, you can call Care-A-Van Coordinator Ann Robson at (519) 736-2520 to book a ride on the Care-A-Van. Thanks to the Golden Age Club and Ministry of Health and Long Term Care we now have a regular minivan that provides rides on Tues. & Thurs. locally when our accessible van is in Windsor. Because we are so very busy, trips need to be booked a minimum of 2 days ahead to secure a seat. Medical trips take priority. Rides are always subject to availability. The Amherstburg Area: 

  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday by accessible van as needed. Tuesday and Thursday rides are in regular minivan locally. Accessible van takes clients to Windsor Tuesday and Thursday

  • Travel Services are provided anywhere in the Amherstburg Area for appointments, banking, shopping, social functions, etc.

  • Cost is $4.00 round trip; $5.00 for long routes- changes occurred in January 2006

  • Call for clarification of boundaries (519) 736-2520

  • Cost to Windsor is $10.00 round trip- increased January 2006

  • Extra trips in town $2.00

The attendant can travel free of charge for those riding in a wheelchair and requiring an attendant.

Funding for the van comes from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, client fees, fundraising and donations from service clubs and individuals.

Harrow and Colchester South Clients are now serviced by Essex Community Services (519) 738-1105.


Amherstburg Community Services is a non-profit charitable organization registered with Revenue Canada.
All donations received are appreciated and eligible for receipts for income tax purposes.
