A Few Words About Meals on Wheels
By Kathy DiBartolomeo, ACS Executive Director
Meals on Wheels; you’ve surely heard of it, but how much do you know about it? This year, we want everyone, regardless of age, to know about the benefits and availability of Meals on Wheels in Amherstburg, LaSalle, Harrow, and McGregor. Whether you know little or a lot about this vital program, I urge you to read on and share this column with others. You never know who might have someone in their life who’d benefit from receiving healthy, affordable meals.
First thing’s first: ACS, the organization which provides Meals on Wheels in our region, is a proud, independent charity that has operated in Amherstburg for over 45 years. Our meals are prepared right here in Amherstburg every morning before they are delivered by friendly volunteers. We do not deliver pre-packaged food. Even frozen meals, which can be requested for days we do not deliver, are all made in our kitchen.
While our meals are often associated with aging at home, seniors aren’t the only ones who benefit. If you’re recovering from a surgery or operation that makes it difficult to prepare your own meals, or if you’re a new mom or mom-to-be, you can receive meals.
This month, we ask that you have a part in our meals on wheels program. There are many ways you can help: you can make a donation, become a volunteer, or simply spread the word to help ensure that everyone who might need the service, knows where to get it. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for taking the initiative to help your community!
