Meals On Wheels What is Meals on Wheels? The Meals on Wheels program was designed to help preserve the independence of members of our community who, for various medical reasons, would otherwise find themselves in the custodial care of someone else. You do not necessarily need to be frail or elderly - you may have severe arthritis, diabetes, or other medical problems (including recovering from surgery) that will qualify you to receive the service. Its purpose is to provide a nutritionally balanced meal each day for members of our community who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. You also receive the benefit of a friendly visit from our very valuable volunteers.
The program provides a meal delivered to your door at the noon hour with a choice of three times a week or five times a week. If you need a meal on Saturday, Sunday or holiday, we can deliver 2 frozen meals along with your Friday meal. The frequency of receiving meals is your choice, but must be specified when you register. We service Amherstburg and Harrow clients. The meals are produced by our fantastic cook, Veronica Kirk, at our Meals on Wheels kitchen in Amherstburg Community Church, 125 Alma Street, Amherstburg and delivered by our dedicated volunteers from Monday to Friday. Meals generally consist of soup, a hot main dish bread and butter, and a dessert. The meals are cooked salt free and everything is baked or broiled rather then fried. In addition, should you have any dietary restrictions, these are recorded at the time you register. The meals cost $4.00 each. We appreciate all feedback.
You may register by e-mailing us, calling Ann Robson at (519) 736-2520 or dropping by the Amherstburg Community Services office, 9:00am to 12:00 or 1:00pm to 4:00pm and filling out an application form.
How do I volunteer to deliver for Meals on Wheels? We always welcome new volunteers for both Amherstburg and Harrow. For further information on volunteering, you can call our office at (519) 736-2520 or go to the United Way Website and click on the Voluntary Sector Connector. Our great team of volunteers are under the leadership of Debbie Vigneux in Amherstburg and Derek Davis in Harrow. The Amherstburg Meals on Wheels program is provided by the ACS and is financed by client contributions, the Province of Ontario, the United Way of Windsor Essex County, and by private donations.
