Board of Directors We welcome new members at all times for a minimum fee of $5 to show commitment. Must be 18 years of age or over and a resident or representative of any organization in the Amherstburg area. We welcome your ideas, knowledge and skills. The Board meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month from September to June. We are always looking for new members to assist with committees as project, as well as those who may be interested in serving as a Director. Call 736-5471 for more information. Elections are held each June for Directors. Our mandate is to study the social, health, educational, recreational and other human needs of the Amherstburg area, and services available to satisfy those needs; and to promote the orderly development of well-balanced community services, working with the community to identify who can best fill community needs. Meals on Wheels Our delicious meals for seniors and adults with need for assistance with meal preparation is now being prepared by our excellent cook, Veronica Kirk, at the Amherstburg Community Church. We are enjoying our new site, and although mean numbers have been rising, we can still serve more clients. Call for any questions if you wonder if you qualify. You do not necessarily need to be frail elderly - you may have severe arthritis, diabetes, or other medical problems (including recovering from surgery) that will qualify you to receive the service. Our meals are nutritionally balanced and delivered to your door for just $4.00 per meal, and you also get the benefit of a friendly visit from our very valuable volunteers. If you have financial difficulties call regarding how you can be assisted to be part of the program. Click on: Services, above for more details on our Meals on Wheels program. We also have a great need for more volunteer drivers to deliver meals. We are happy to say that we now service Harrow clients and have a great team of volunteers with the leadership of Derek Davis. Great thanks to the team serving Harrow! Amherstburg Now Has Approval for a Family Health Team! In the spring of 2001, Human Resources Development Canada provided a Job Career Placement Grant to the Essex, Amherstburg and Belle River Planning Councils with Essex and District Social Planning Council taking the lead role to undertake a telephone needs survey for their service areas to determine current needs that will enable them to plan for their respective communities. This project has also provided a model that can be easily used for future projects to determine needs in planning for services. The report was completed in the summer of 2002. It is a comprehensive report to be shared with all interested stakeholders. Thanks to those who participated in the telephone survey. Your input was most helpful. In December 2002, Essex Community Services hired Michael Howard to put the packages together and conduct a community focus group. The survey can be accessed at the Essex Community Services website. Community response to the original survey, “Does Amherstburg Need a Community Health Centre”, was remarkable, with Amherstburg Community Services receiving a greater number of returned surveys than originally anticipated. Thank you to all Amherstburg residents who took the time to complete and return the ACS survey. The response and information collected proved invaluable to the approval of Amherstburg's Family Health Team. Special thanks to Sophie Iafrate, Colleen Mitchell, and our many volunteers that assisted us with our research and proposal. for more information on CHC's you may visit the Association of Ontario Health Centres web page at http://www.aohc.org/ . As an update, as of Jan. 2007 we have now an incorporated Family Health Team for Amherstburg, with its own Board of Directors. The President is Paul Hertel, and new Board members from the community have come together to make a great team to move the process forward. They are actively planning and should have funding in early 2007 to begin to create Amherstburg's temporary facility, to be followed with a permanent site that will provide Amherstburg citizens with increased access to health provision, including physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and other primary health care providers, dependant of funding and demonstrated needs of the community. Frank Pizzuto, remains as Treasurer and the Team can be reached at Amherstburg Municipal Offices, 519-736-0012. Their web site is www.afht.ca, and the newly hired administrator is Mike Levitt. Watch your local media for ongoing reports. Amherstburg Community Services officially has a new address: We have moved, with all our excellent service provider partners, to 601 Sandwich St. S., Amherstburg, ON N9V 3Z7. Our phone number is still 519-736-5471. Fax is 519-736-1391. Care-A-Van and Meals on Wheels Administration is at the same site, and can be reached at 519-736-2520. Our accessible ramp is completed and we have a handicapped parking space, so that we are fully accessible. We also have additional paved parking spaces, and ask for cooperation in parking to allow maximum use of spaces. Please do not use the space that is the drive through to the back lot. On busy days, parking is available on CrownRidge street area. Thanks to our clients for your patience during our transition.
